Mahavira The Great Hero of Jainism. Dating from the 5th century BCE, Mahavir is considered to be the 24th in a line of jinas or spiritual victors who, like Buddha, teach the way of release from the sufferings of karma. Jains practice asceticism and ahimsa, complete nonviolence toward all living creatures, to free the jiva (soul) from bondage, and follow the 11 angas (limbs) of conduct composed by Indrabhuti, Mahavir's chief disciple. |
